The tax point, in brief

  • Capital Gains Tax. Gold sovereigns are UK legal tender, so gains on them are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.
  • VAT. Investment gold, which includes sovereigns, is exempt from VAT.

The article also looked at collectible sovereigns, where a scarce date or a high grade can carry a premium above the value of the gold itself.
